The Study of the Epics of the Nogai Period

One layer of epic songs of the Kazakh people is the Nogai epic. They are based on the Kazakh-Nogai epic traditions, once in the same ethnic union. The article discusses some issues of studying these legends. Of course, epic traditions, starting from the Nogai era, have different paths of development. As a result, epic genres have been preserved in the folklore of one of these peoples, while they have not been reflected in the folklore of others. For example, in Kazakh folklore, epic tales have been preserved as part of the genealogical cycle about Nogai heroes, but most of them are unknown to the Nogai people.
The collection of the epic legacy of the Nogai era began in the 40s of the last century. At the same time, three genealogical cycles consisting of about thirty epic tales were recorded from the epic storyteller Muryn Sengirbekov. Unfortunately, during Soviet times there was no opportunity to study these heroic tales. Their publication, dissemination, and scientific study were prohibited. Nevertheless, individual researchers have written and published studies in periodicals on the epic legacy of the Nogai era. The Nogai epic began to be published only after the country gained sovereignty. It has been included in various folklore and ethnographic collections dedicated to the Kazakh epic. Despite recent research by individual researchers, the Nogai epic has not been studied from the perspective of ethnic history.
