Organization of an Elective Course Using the “5E Model” Method

Abstract

The article describes the methodology of an elective course in chemistry for 10th-grade students in general secondary schools, organized on the basis of the “5E Model” method, using the example of a single lesson plan. Now, the training of professionals for the country's education system is becoming very relevant. Our goal is to increase the students' cognitive interest in chemistry by organizing an elective course using various effective methods in our practice and providing strategies that contribute to achieving high results. Additionally, we aim to guide students in becoming fully developed professionals, helping them choose their future careers without confusion, and educating specialists with strong professional competencies.
The article focuses on the main steps and methods of organizing an elective course. The importance of improving professional competence and elective courses for high school students is described. Based on this, the school developed a methodology for organizing an elective chemistry course utilizing effective methods, which led to the adoption of the so-called “5E Model” Method in teaching chemistry.
In addition, the lesson plan, duration, timeline, and objectives of the elective course are outlined in the article. Based on the organized methodology, one sample laboratory experiment is fully presented. A small-scale study was conducted among students to assess the effectiveness of the lesson according to the organized method. The results were tested and demonstrated during the experiment.
Through this elective course model, students were able to enhance their cognitive interest in chemistry, expand their knowledge, and develop self-expression, confidence, and critical thinking skills. The practical significance of the article lies in its potential usefulness for educators implementing elective courses based on the described methodology.
