Teaching the Saga of the Golden Horde Era “Khusrau-Shyryn”

This academic article provides a comprehensive analysis of how the literary heritage of the Golden Horde era has been transmitted into the modern literary space and explores the artistic and stylistic characteristics of these works. It offers an in-depth examination of the poetic language, structural composition, genre traits, stylistic features, and historical-cultural significance of literary texts from that period. Special attention is given to qissa-dastans as a genre, analyzing their ideological and thematic content and their contribution to the literary thought of the medieval Turkic world. The study highlights the continuity of Golden Horde literature within modern Kazakh literary tradition and its value in moral and spiritual education.
The central focus of the article is the qissa-dastan “Khosrow and Shirin”, a prominent example of classical Eastern literature. The work is analyzed in terms of its structure, poetic richness, and philosophical depth. The article demonstrates how studying this literary piece enhances students’ worldview, aesthetic sensitivity, moral values, and critical thinking. It also emphasizes the role of such texts in developing skills for literary analysis and interpretation.
The methodological framework is based on the works of K. Bitibayeva (“Effective Methods of Teaching Literature”) and B. Zhumakayeva (“Methodology of Teaching Kazakh Literature”). Drawing on these sources, the article presents a range of oral, written, and visual techniques designed to help students engage more deeply with literary texts. Additionally, it offers structured tasks and exercises aimed at fostering analytical and critical thinking, including problem-based questions, reflective discussions, and creative assignments. This article serves as a practical and theoretical resource for instructors teaching the course “Ancient Period of Kazakh Literature” and for future philologists, as well as those interested in effective methods of teaching literature.
